Can dogs eat Takis?

Takis snacks

You should not feed your dog Takis. This is because of all the extra ingredients that may harm your dog, as well as the low nutritional content of the snack.

What are Takis?

Takis are a snack food invented and made in Mexico, but also sold in places like America. They are a type of rolled corn tortilla chip, and come in many flavours. A lot of the flavours are spicy, such as “Habanero and Lime” or “Cheese and Chilli Pepper”.

The ingredients in each bag of Takis will depend on the flavour. However, Takis will generally contain corn masa flour, oil (such as vegetable oil), salt, and artificial colours and flavours. They can also contain onion powder and garlic powder, in addition to hot chili pepper and other spicy powders.

The nutritional content will also vary depending on flavour. However, Takis are generally high in calories, fat and sodium. They have minimal other nutrients that are of benefit.

Can dogs have Takis?

Avoid feeding your dog Takis, as they may make your dog sick. Onion powder and garlic powder, common ingredients in Takis, can make your dog unwell. This is because onions and garlic are actually toxic to dogs, and in severe cases can lead to anaemia and kidney damage.

The hot chili pepper and other spicy flavourings can also irritate your dog’s digestive system, possibly leading to Gastritis. Gastritis is inflammation of the stomach caused by eating incompatible foods. Symptoms of this include vomiting and blood in stools.

Furthermore, the high calorie, high fat and high sodium levels in Takis can lead to other problems with your pooch. Excessive consumption of junk foods can cause weight gain, heart problems and diabetes in your dog. There is minimal nutritional benefit in feeding your dog Takis – so avoid these if you love your pooch!

Conclusion

Takis are a snack enjoyed by humans – and even then it should be in moderation! Takis should not be fed to dogs, due to a variety of reasons:

  • They can contain onion and garlic products which are toxic to dogs
  • They can contain spicy flavourings which can cause stomach problems for your dog
  • They contain lots of calories and fat which can make your dog overweight
  • They have little nutritional content

Avoid Takis and try a healthier alternative, your dog will appreciate you for it!
